Thanksgiving Feast, Halloween Fun

We had a very wonderful Thanksgiving this year. We are so blessed to have so many great friends here in Hong Kong and also at home across the US. Thanksgiving this year was celebrated with several families from our Branch. All together we had 19 adults and 23 kids. And of course all the delicious food you could imagine, I really think I can't complain about food, we can get just about everything here. Bentz really enjoyed all the friends and food and continually tells me "We should do that again".
I was invited to teach Audreys 1st grade class about Thanksgiving, which was so fun! Audrey is the only American in her class of 30! She feels even more special now.

We had a nice Halloween this year! Jorie was Cleopatra, she won a prize for best costume at a party because it was all homemade. She enjoyed the black hairspray alot. Audrey was a Witch, along with several of her friends from school, all very cute and unique, witches must wear high heels, just so you know. Bentz couldn't decide so he dressed up as a couple different things for different events, school party: cowboy, girls school Halloween disco: Batman, Halloween day: Buzz Lightyear, Halloween night: Batman. Halloween is very American by the way. It is a little different here but at least the kids all get sick eating too much candy. Bentz puked his candy after eating about the equivalent of his body weight. The crowded street is trick or treating Hong Kong style. There is one street in our community that passes out candy, I think because they are the most "houses" in a row. I think high-rise buildings wouldn't work very well. Needless to say, it is a little overwhelming to go trick or treating. The funny thing is that our friends from other parts of the world are surprised to hear that it is not like that in the US.

We are preparing for a trip to the Philippines for Christmas. I hope to post about our trip before the end of January.

Summer and Birthdays!

I know many of those who look at this blog may be shocked to see another posting so soon. I am making a bigger effort to keep up with stuff.
So I am still not super good at making this blog look cool. I don't know how to do fancy stuff but as long as I write a little and put up a few pictures I guess thats what is most important.
Here in Hong Kong the Swine Flu finally got us, well Audrey at least. The school is closed for the next week because there are so many sick kids at our school. Audrey is going stir crazy, she is like me - needs to get out! It seems like I am never home and I just want to be home for a change. Then I stay home with sick kids for a few days and can't wait to go to the grocery store just for a change of scenery. The crazy thing about my sick kids is Jorie and Bentz have both had fevers and similar symptoms to Audrey but when they were tested they didn't have a flu, just a bug I guess. Wierd.

This past summer we spent one week in California with my parents. Then we went to Logan for a few weeks taking one week out to hang out with my family in Aspen Grove. We had a great time and tried to make the most of everything that was available. I will give a list of the cool things we did.

We really had a great time. It was a longer summer stay than in years past so we had more time to just relax and not travel too much. Jorie's Baptism was the highlight of the summer. She was baptized in the Provo river at Grandma Leflers house. Same place that Beau and his dad were baptized. It was really nice to have so many family and friends there with us. Everything was absolutely wonderful.

We returned to Hong Kong on Tuesday night at 7pm and the girls both slept really great that night so they jumped into school the next day. They missed the first two days of school. I was really impressed at their jetlag recovery.
Jorie is in 3rd grade now and Audrey is in 1st grade. Bentz has started at preschool, Tuesday Thursday 12-3. For the first time I have all kids in school for 6 hours a week. If I thought it was sad to have both of the girls in full day school last year then I think I could only say that when Bentz is at school it is just lonely. I hope to take the alone time to read a few books and try to find something that interests me enough to go back to school sometime in the next couple of years.

Audrey had her 6th Birthday on September 11th. It was loads of fun. Our house was a magical world of butterflies. So much fun!

Now it is getting late and I am running out of words. Here are some pictures to add some color to my words.

Finally an update!

Okay I knew it had been awhile, but not that long. Yes we are still in Hong Kong. Beau is fortunate enough to still have a job. I have no idea what it is like in the states with the exception of what I hear from family. I hope everyone that might view this blog is well.

We have been busy, as I am sure you are. It is crazy how fast time flies. My kids are all growing up too fast. Bentz is nearly three now! I still call him my baby every once in a while.

Beau- Still an amazing person and the best companion I ever could have been blessed with. Beau participated in the 100km MacLehose trailwalker charity event. He and three teammates hiked for 100km in Hong Kong and completed the course in 30 something hours. They all did great! Now Beau is trying to plan a trip with some friends to do something cool like drive a mountain bike through the mountains of Vietnam.

Marjorie- A fantastic student at school and at piano lessons. She also enjoys her scetching class and recently started a swimming class at school, and a singing/dancing class. Jorie is constantly reading, recently she has read; Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, Little house on the Prairie series, to name a few. We are always looking for more great books to feed to her brain if you have any suggestions please pass them our way. Jorie now rides her bike to and from school and receives her bus fare as an allowance. She is saving up to buy an American Girl Doll.

Audrey- Also a fabulous student at school and at home. Audrey loves to do everything that I do. She learns a lot. Audrey keeps up with Jorie most of the time. Audrey also participates in swimming lessons at school and a singing/dancing class with Jorie. Audrey rides her bike to and from school with Jorie and is saving her money also. (Don't know if she is old enough for an American Girl Doll yet) Audrey has become a very strong reader like her big sister, she enjoys reading Berenstein Bears and Dr. Suess and a series of chapter books about fairies.

Bentz- Still as adorable as ever, I can't get enough of this little guy! Bentz has a great little bike without pedals or training wheels he has learned to balance as he zooms down the street with his big sisters. I get a lot of comments on this amazing boy on his bike. Bentz loves swimming and playing and riding his bike whenever he can. I think he would sleep with his bike if I let him. Getting ready for potty training again, long story. He will earn a bike with pedals when he wears big boy underpants. Bentz loves the letters of the alphabet and will listen to anyone that will read to him. He reminds me of Jorie in that department, amazing attention span sometimes (He is still a boy).

I am always busy but don't feel like I am getting much done. I guess that is the blessing/curse of being a full time Mom. I am loving the time that I have to be with the kids and do fun activities, we have a new helper that started in Nov. She is great, making my life easier to focus on the kids and not so stressed about housework stuff. Sometimes I worry that I might loose my skills of balancing housework and kids, but i don't know that I ever really mastered that anyway. So I hope I will be able to handle life when we live in the U.S. again someday.

For Christmas Beau gave me a ticket to Thailand, two of my friends also received tickets. We had a girls weekend without kids a few weeks ago and it was a ton of fun. We saw some sights, shopped, got massages and shopped more. It was great! (and so cheap)

We moved at the beginning of March to a larger flat. We have really enjoyed the increased space, balcony and private rooms for the kids. Each of the girls have very small bedrooms and Bentz has a large room that serves as the playroom. We can host guests now much better than before. So anyone who wants to come please do! Beau's sister recently came for a week on her way to Thailand and we had a great time.

I almost forgot, We went to The Philippines again this year. Two weeks of January we were on the island of Palawan. We again took supplies to a school with Help One Future charity. www.helponefuture.org What a great experience! We had the opportunity to get to know a handful of the students as they came to our rental house in the village every day after school. Seriously awesome, what more can I say. We went out boating and snorkeling, we saw some clown fish and their anemone's, so cool! Too many stories to tell on a keyboard.

Just a couple weeks ago we went camping at a campsite on the beach not too far away. It is a fun time with the kids, small enough that we can let them explore and not worry too much.

We feel very fortunate to be living here in Hong Kong and enjoying the many experiences that life here affords. We look forward to our visit home this summer. We will be in Utah for 6 weeks. Jorie will be baptised in August at Grandma Lefler's house. If anyone will be available for a visit please let us know.

Birthday Girls

Jorie had her Birthday on August 16th and was lucky enough to have her party with friends on her Birthday. She had a pajama party, we decorated pillow cases and teddy bears, gave toothpaste and toothbrushes for party favors. We watched the Parent Trap and had lots of fun! Hooray for 7 year old Jorie!

Audrey turned 5 on September 11th. Her party was more than a week later as we were out of town the weekend after her Birthday. Audrey had a beautiful party with frills and sparkles and pink (all that Audrey represents). We decorated "Fancy Nancy" purses. The girls dressed up, had their hair, nails, and make-up done. Each guest went home with a fancy purse, a boa, and lip gloss. Hooray for 5 year old Audrey!

First Day of School!

The first day of school is one of my most favorite days! So much excitement in the air. New clothes, new friends, new teachers. This year our girls started at their new school. Last year we watched the construction outside our window and now the school is finished. The school is absolutely amazing.
Both Audrey and Jorie have wonderful teachers. I especially love how their teachers seem to be perfect matches for their personalities. I couldn't ask for anything better when it comes to education this year!

I was asked recently when my friend saw this picture, "Were the bugs bad, did you see any snakes or crazy insects or anything?" It looks pretty crazy I guess, but it was not at all bad, no problems, we saw one lizard but it was not anything to tell a story about. More than anything else there were a lot of butterflies. It was the most beautiful, peaceful hike that I have been on in a long time.
Both Jorie and Audrey are close to the same height as this woman. She sold us some bananas, this is on the Japanese Bridge, notice Audrey's peace.
I like to tease Jorie about how she puts out the peace sign in a lot of pictures these days. I think it has something to do with the water. This isn't popular in the states is it?

Silk worm breeding tour, the white stuff is hundreds of worms, 3 days old. The green is mostly leafs with a few worms. Motorcycle tour, the guide drove Bentz and I since I don't have motorcycle skills like Beau.

We drove past a wedding and they asked us to take pictures. Aparently Bentz was not done looking at the bride in this picture. Thanks for helping with the pose Audrey.
This is the pride of my photography for the trip. I think it looks like a postcard. I just have to say that if you take enough pictures (i.e. 480 in 4 days) something is bound to turn out GREAT!

Hoi An Vietnam

We hiked through the jungle and found the ancient ruins of tmeples that are from the same time as the Cambodian temples that Beau and I went to.This is the Japanese Bridge in Hoi An, there were both Japanese and Chinese communities living here and the Japanese built this bridge to connect the two communities. Originally built in 1500's.
There were a lot of women carrying these baskets on their shoulders with a variety of different things. Hard working women!
There are several temples in Hoi An from different cultures. This one was very bright. The Japanese temple had beautiful gardens, the Cantonese temple had ornate dragons all over the entrance. I don't know what this one is but it was very bright so it caught my eye, it is also much smaller than most of the other temples.
Bentz is driving the boat, Our driver was so happy, he smiled like this the whole time. He gave each of the kids a turn driving.

This is Winn, she has family in Garden Grove CA, she was so nice to the kids, Audrey chose a lantern to match her dress. Bentz thought he should pull all of the tassels that he could reach.

Here's some excitement. Yesterday on our way home from Vietnam I took Bentz to the tiny little bathroom on the airplane cause he needed to poop and he still likes to go in the toilet most of the time. So after he told me a few times that he was indeed done with his business I proceeded to clean his bum and then started to maneuver things so I could put his diaper back on while I was holding him in the cramped space that we were in. Then I saw some poop on his bum and thought I must have missed something, well I was mistaken, I didn't miss something he decided to poop some more! All over me! So then I called in some help. . . "Beau, HELP!" This was my wispered shout down about 6 rows to where Beau was sitting with the girls. Lucky for me the hotel staff gave some t-shirts to the kids as we left so they were in the carry-on which they almost made us check. Phew. I cleaned my skirt the best I could and then changed my t-shirt. Just so you know I should never wear a t-shirt intended for Audrey! I made it through the last 10 minutes of the flight and changed my clothes as soon as I got our suitcase, yes I did a deck change at the ticketing counter as we checked in for our second flight.

So I got a new calling in church.
Now can you tell me please does this look like a Relief Society President?
I was completely surprised myself! I think it will be a great learning and growing experience! I am really excited to be able to serve in the awesome branch that we attend.

P.S. For those of you that do not belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Relief Society is an organization for Women, motto: Charity Never Faileth. Such a great organization to be a part of! The branch that I refer to is our local congregation of the Church.

Bentz broke his arm.

So sad to see a two year old wearing a cast!

He has a small fracture near the wrist. The Dr. says that young children will pull off the cast if it does not go up over the elbow. We were playing around, the kids and I, when Bentz got his arm pinned under his body in a weird position, I think that is what caused the fracture.

In three weeks he will have the cast removed, just in time for his second birthday. He will be back to fighting fires/slaying dragons and swinging on the playground like a monkey again in no time!

Beau is really getting old now. Of course I can only say that for a few more weeks until we become the same age again. We went to dinner to celebrate.
Bentz had some super CHEESEY macaroni and cheese.
Other than Beau's Birthday we are just hanging out. Our kids all love to read, so awesome!
Jorie and Audrey think Bentz is a doll, sometimes literally. They got a little carried away this time. Obviously Dad was not home at the time.
Too Bad! Cause here comes the coolest kid on the block; he is comfortable with his masculinity.

Our next trip will be to Hoi An, Vietnam. We are really excited for this trip, always fun with the kids. Every country seems to have something different and interesting to offer. We feel so fortunate to be able to visit so many places while we are living here. The best part is, our trip to the States once a year gives us enough miles for one or two trips within Asia. Most countries are fairly cheap for hotel and food as well. This is not an advertisement but I hope you know that you are always welcome to come and visit.

Making A Comeback

So I have a lot of work to do. My last attempt at posting was unsuccessful and extremely frustrating. Our computer recently crashed, this was a first for me. We backed up our pictures just before we left California for Hong Kong so we were fortunate enough to only loose 1 year of pictures. I am working on recovering what I can from everyone. So if I sent you any pictures or if we were with you sometime in the last year and you took pictures of our family then please let me know, Thanks.

Our most recent excitement was a trip for just Beau and I to Angkor Wat Cambodia. I sent pictures out already so I will only post one from Angkor Wat.

Last week we went camping for a couple days. Interesting in a few ways. One, we took a ferry and a taxi to get 1 kilometer away from the site and hiked in with the kids and all the gear. Two, our friends were with us, one brave father with his three children. Three, first camping experience as a family and first time camping in Hong Kong. Good Times!

Just today I was out and about in Hong Kong with the kids. We went to the zoo, the main library (huge), a quick run through IKEA where Bentz slept on a bed for about 30 minutes and took the street car back to Central (down town) to catch the ferry back to Discovery Bay. A very adventurous day!

We are still alive and doing well. Just waiting for the chance to write. We have had so many wonderful experiences. We feel so fortunate to be living in Hong Kong. We have been blessed with good friends and many opportunities. We are looking forward to a great year and hope to remain happy and healthy here in Hong Kong.

Home is where your heart is.

We are back in HK. It is nice to be home. We had a great time visiting the States. We were able to see a lot of friends and family. Returning to HK has been challenging at times but over all it is nice to get back settled in. Beau took me to California Pizza Kitchen the other night. It is nice to have a few comforts of home around.

Jorie, who prefers Marjorie these days, has started at her new school. ISF, if you want to see what her school is about there are pictures on their website at www.isf.edu.hk. She is learning Mandarin and so far she is doing great and learning a lot. I have a friend that is helping with the language, it is so fun to see her light up when she can use the Chinese that she knows.

Audrey will be starting school in another week, I am looking forward to her reaction. She will also be in a Mandarin intensive program. Both of the girls will be speaking Chinese before long and I will have no idea what they are saying. Hopefully Beau will be able to keep up with them.

Beau and I recently hiked to the highest point in our area. It was a beautiful hike through lush jungle. We passed a small waterfall and went through areas that were shaded by trees with tropical flowers. I was able to push through despite my fear of coming across a snake or other frightening creatures, and made it to the peak we were aiming for. Later in the day I told one of my friends where we had hiked and she said we were brave to do that during snake season. Holy cow, I couldn't believe it. I am so glad we were safe. There are several highly poisonous snakes in Hong Kong. Not to mention spiders, Beau recently came across a very large spider while hiking near by, he walked into the web and looked up to see a spider that was 5 inches in diameter. I am so glad I wasn't there to see it.

We also recently went to a beautiful beach where wind surfing and kayaking are popular because of the cove that keeps waves relatively low. The next beach outside of the cove is a great place for surfing apparently. It is nice to see some of the more untouched places in HK. Such a contrast from the big city with skyscrapers. Amazing that tropical beaches and lush jungle landscapes are so close to such a huge city.

The first two pictures are the views from our apartment. You can see the mountain that we hiked and Disney land with Central (downtown) in the background. There is a picture of the whole family on a hike and Jorie and Audrey posing with a Dragon boat, there are dragon boat races every year for a festival celebrated in early summer.

It's Friday night we are all packed up ready to go to California. All we need to do in the morning is see Beau for the first time in a few days and get to the airport in time for lunch and say good-bye to Beau for two weeks. Thats right I am flying for more than 13 hours with 3 children under the age of 6. (OK so Jorie will be 6 next month, but still) Some say I am crazy but I say "thats just how it is".
I am really excited to see friends and family. Then there are the few things that I am looking forward to; driving my Odyssey, shopping at Target, Costco, Trader Joe's etc., can't wait to see the beach, the Woodbridge Lagoon, and parks that are not infested with biting sand flies, so annoying! I think it will be fun to relive our experiences as we visit with friends and family. I have been thinking I should post a recent e-mail that I sent to Beau at the end of "One of those days". It just goes to show you that aside from the few variations we all have similar experiences. I am sure you can relate in some way.

Beau,

Now you might be thinking, is she being sarcastic or genuine about this title "adventurous day"? The fact is I am both. It was an adventure in that we didn't know what we were doing from one moment to the next however there were things that happened today that I simply could have done without. So looking on the bright side, I have learned a few things today, you might say the hard way.

1. Never leave Discovery Bay with the children and without cash.
2. Never trust that Gema know's where she is going even if she thinks she does.
3. Never leave the house for the day without enough umbrellas to cover us all.
4. Never leave the house without sufficient feminine hygiene products, or at least bring a sweater to tie around my waist.
5. Never go out with the children and assume that they have enough credit on their octopus cards.

I did plan sufficiently in a few areas however, you could say lessons learned in the past, the hard way.

1. I had diapers and wipes for Bentz.
2. I had snacks and drinks galore for the girls.
3. I had my emergency stash of one cliff bar. (thanks to the Hydes)
4. I had treats hidden in the bag that I could use for bribes if necessary.
5. I had my phone and it was charged.

So hopefully I will learn my lesson and maybe next time we will actually make it to our destination. But hey McDonalds always tastes better when you have traveled on two ferry's to get there and who really wants to see a bunch of Dinosaur bones anyway? I guess we have until November to try try again.

Life

So no matter where we live in this world we get into routines and life just happens. Every once in a while I have to take a big breath and soak it in. School, gymnastics, groceries, "I want a snack" 50 times a day, Beau working late, rain storms, what's for dinner, reading the same book again, I don't want to go to bed (the kids), collapsing at the end of the day (me), and then it all starts over again.

So what is special lately? Birthdays; Beau April 21, Buddha May 24 (public holiday, yeah), Bentz May 29 (one year, wow that was fast). Bentz got his first hair cut, so handsome! Bentz is drinking cows milk, no more mommy milk. Finally had some of our pictures hung in our apartment.

Beau and I are 30, a friend of mine cleared up what 30 is; "30 is not old it's just the end of being young." No matter what everyone older than me says "you're not old" and people younger than me don't really have much to say. I believe that is because 30 is the end of being young!

Another thought: While discussing how great it is to have a babysitter, a friend said "we had kids so they could be around" what a great thought, I have to admit I need to be more appreciative of the great kids I have, but we all need a break sometimes!

A few weeks ago we visited a 300 year old fishing village. There were a lot of interesting things to look at. Dried fish fresh fish cooked fish. There were houses on stilts above the water and bridges and loads of boats. There were a couple of Buddhist Temples. We enjoyed wondering around the village for the day. The girls picked out some fans and really liked the dried sea horses. Beau and I were impressed with the dried shark skins. It is so neat to show so many different things to the girls within a short bus ride or ferry ride. We feel so fortunate to be here in Hong Kong. We hope you enjoy hearing about our experiences. Phuket Thailand

We just returned from a wonderful trip to Thailand. We had fun riding Elephants through the jungle, riding a speed boat around to a few islands, snorkeling, having the girls hair braided, getting massages(so affordable), swimming and eating in the pool, playing at the beach(the water was so warm), collecting seashells, and riding a motorcycle around exploring.
Hope all is well with everyone, we look forward to seeing a lot of family and friends this summer when we are in the states for a few weeks. We love you all. Take care!

We hope this will make it easier to keep in touch with everyone.

Here we are in Hong Kong. Shortly after arriving we celebrated Chinese New Year while recovering from Jet Lag. The picture shows Peach Blossoms which are for good luck. We are holding our hands together which one does and says "Kung Hey Fat Choy!" ( shaking hands in front of you) this means something to the effect of "May you get lots of money in the new year"

So much fun!

There is a picture of Bentz with a red packet which kids receive with money, once again "Kung Hey Fat Choy" The girls thought this was pretty cool and can't wait to buy a new Barbie with the money they received.

There is also a picture of Jorie and Audrey in their Chinese style dresses with matching purses. Unfortunately the dresses fell apart before we made it home from church. Good thing I took a picture the first few minutes they put them on.

I guess that will do for now.
